Recent Faculty Presentations

Ray Swisher, Assistant Professor in the Department of Policy Analyisis presented findings from his research on what communities can do to help working families during a statewide video conference held on February 9, 2005. Professor Swisher discussed the results of his recent research conducted in communities in upstate New York, which examines what communities can do to assist dual-earner families in juggling the competing demands of work, family, and community. John Cawley, Associate Professor in the Department of Policy Analyisis presented findings from his research on Childhood Obesity. Professor Cawley discussed the new Institute of Medicine report, "Preventing Childhood Obesity: Health in the Balance."  Cawley, an economist, served on the IOM committee that wrote the report, which was released on September 30 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.  The committee was formed, and the report written, by act of Congress, which requested an action plan to prevent obesity among children and youth in the United States.  The committee examined behavioral and cultural factors, social constructs, and broad environmental factors involved in childhood obesity and identified promising approaches for prevention.  In this distance learning activity, Professor Cawley summarized the key points of the report and answered questions about how county extension agents can assist in the nation-wide effort to prevent childhood obesity. Rachel Dunifon, Associate Professor in the Department of Policy Analyisis, presented findings from her research on Family Structure and Child Development. Professor Dunifon focused on single parenthood, cohabitation and the role of grandparents related to child outcomes. To view her powerpoint presentation, click here.
