Here's a good tip -- send a LETTER OF INTENT before submitting a full proposal...
What is a letter of intent?
A Letter of Intent (LOI) is a brief description of a proposed research activity that researchers submit to each individual foundation, agency or non-profit that they believe may be a source of potential funding. Each funder will have their own, specific guidelines for submission procedures, available through their web site. Most Letters of Intent require the following information from prospective applicants:
- Notice of Intent to Submit Application
- Principal Investigator
- Email Address
- Position
- Title
- Department or Laboratory
- Institution
- Street Address, City and State
- Country and Zip Code
- Telephone
- Fax
- Project Title
- Brief (100 words) Project Abstract or Description
- List of All Collaborators or Key Personnel
The information contained in the letter of intent allows potential funders to review your eligibility, avoid potential conflicts of interest in the review process, and verify contact information. After the organization has reviewed the Letter of Intent, they will notify you if we they are able to consider your request for funding. Organizations eligible for funding will be invited to submit a full proposal, and the guidelines for proposal submission will usually be sent to you or will be made available on their web site.
