New York Parenting Programs

For Fathers Only

For Fathers Only is a research-based Parenting program developed by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County and was the basis for a statewide training for professionals on Involving Fathers in Parenting Education held in November 2003. Greg Auffrey, Extension Educator in Jefferson County designed and implemented the program with military fathers at Fort Drum over the past three years. The program has been replicated at other army bases across the country. The program has also been successfully used with fathers in Jefferson County who were mandated to attend Parenting classes through the Department of Social Services. The purpose of For Fathers Only is to enhance the awareness of fathers as to the significant contribution they make toward the development of their children, and to educate them on effective parenting strategies that nurture their children to be responsible, respectful and happy adults. The classes are interactive incorporating activities, videos, discussion and guest speakers. The program has 4 sessions addressing the following topics:

  • Session 1- Daddy's Love: Why It's Vital! 9 Ways Dads Make a Difference
  • Session 2- Understanding and Preventing Child Misbehavior
  • Session 3- Discipline: Using natural and Logical Consequences
  • Session 4- Handling the Stress of Long Distance Parenting

The curriculum includes a Trainers Outline, Lesson At A Glance, Power Point Presentation, Handouts and Background Information for each of the 4 sessions, Power Point CD, a section describing research which supports the program, supplementary articles on fathering, fathering resources and marketing ideas. There are also supplementary booklets including Dads at a Distance: An Activities Handbook for Strengthening Long Distance Relationships and 10 Ways To Be a Better Dad.
